CLASS TITLE: PARA EDUCATOR

 

 

BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, assist a certificated teacher in reinforcing instruction to individual or small groups of students in a classroom or other learning environment; assist teachers with the preparation of instructional materials; tutor students in assigned subject areas.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Tutor individual or small groups of students, reinforcing instruction as directed by the teacher; monitor and oversee student drills, practices and assignments in various subjects.

 

Provide classroom support to the teacher by setting up work areas and displays, operating equipment, and distributing and collecting paper, supplies and materials; confer with teachers concerning lesson plans and materials to meet student needs.

 

Assist assigned teacher with the implementation of lesson plans; administer various tests.

 

Assist assigned teacher with scoring student work/assessments and recording grades.

 

Assists in maintaining order among students in the classroom, on school grounds and in the community. Supervises students in the classroom, on school grounds and in the gathering areas, during community-based instruction, on field trips, and at special events.

 

Observe and control behavior of students in the classroom and during outdoor activities according to approved procedures; report progress regarding student performance and behavior.

 

Operate a variety of classroom and office equipment including but not limited to a computer, copier, paper cutter and laminator.

 

Perform a variety of clerical duties such as preparing, typing and duplicating instructional materials, maintain student files as assigned; record student attendance. 

 

Assure the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and procedures; maintain learning environment in a safe, orderly and clean manner.

 

Direct group activities of students as assigned; assist in monitoring cafeteria, recess and other playground activities as assigned; accompany students on field trips as assigned.

 

Attend and participate in parent conferences and a variety of meetings as assigned.

 

Perform related duties as assigned.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Child guidance principles and practices.

Safe practices in classroom and playground activities.

Basic subjects taught in District schools, including mathematics, grammar, spelling, language and reading.

Basic instructional methods and techniques.

Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.

Classroom procedures and appropriate student conduct.

Operation of standard office and classroom equipment.

Oral and written communication skills.

Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.

Basic record-keeping techniques.

 

ABILITY TO:

Assist with instruction and related activities in a classroom or assigned learning environment.

Reinforce instruction to individual or small groups of students as directed by the teacher.

Understand and follow oral and written directions.

Establish and maintain cooperative, collaborative and effective working relationships with others.

Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Monitor, observe and report student behavior and progress according to approved policies and procedures.

Operate standard office and classroom equipment.

Observe health and safety regulations.

Perform clerical duties related to classroom activities.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Possess a high school diploma and an AA degree from an accredited college or university, or 48 semester units from an institute of higher education, or have demonstrated knowledge of Language Arts, Mathematics and the Ability to Assist in Instruction (Test).

Experience working with children in an organized setting.

Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally.

Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:                 

Salary and terms of employment are described in the Agreement between Sunnyvale School District and California School Employees Association.

 

EVALUATION:                    

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance to Agreement between Sunnyvale School District and California School Employees Association.
